Linda Edna Cardellini was born in Redwood City, California, to Lorraine (Hernan) and Wayne David Cardellini who is a businessman. She is of Italian (from her maternal grandfather), Irish (from her mother), German, English and Scottish origins. Cinderella (2015) became her first film following the time she played the role of Lady Rose MacClare (2012-2015) in Downton Abbey, the period television drama. James later played the Countess Natasha Rostova on the TV adaptation of War & Peace in 2016. In addition, she has starred in a variety of films, including Baby Driver (2017) and period dramas Darkest Hour (2017) and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society 2018. She also appeared in The Dig 2021, as and musicals Mamma Mia! We're Going Again (2019) and Yesterday (2018). Her portrayal of Pamela Anderson in the biographical series Pam & Tommy (2022) earned her nominations for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award.
