Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a teenager. Ford became interested in the profession of acting in her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate was also a regular performer in theatre and eventually joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
